What's in a Name?
Choosing the right title for artworks is crucial to me. I like to make people think a bit about the piece, not something too obvious, but something that grabs their attention.
Naming my latest painting was a real challenge. My husband, who's a writer, and I tossed ideas back and forth like a game of ping pong. It went like this:
R "What about Something Coming?"
D "Nope."
R "Bruised?".
D "Definitely not."
R "Close?"
D "Hmm, maybe."
D "Winter green?"
R "Not quite."
R "Approaching?"
D "Could work."
D "Winter Rain?"
R *Big sigh*
R "The Front?"
D "Eh, not quite."
R "Imminent?".
D "Nah."
"Storm Warning?"
"YES! That's it!"
And that's how "Storm Warning" came to be.

A little bit about the inspiration for Storm Warning.
Storm Warning was inspired by the changing weather in Ferguson Valley where we live. After a long, hot, and dry summer, we've finally got a wet and cold winter, which we love because the rain turns the hills and paddocks into a vibrant green. The storms that bring the rain come with these intense, black, threatening skies. Sometimes, the skies are this dark purply-blue-black that looks amazing against the bright green hills. That contrast is just breathtaking, and I tried to capture that dramatic moment in Storm Warning.
I hope you agree with our choice of name. Let me know in the comments what you think.
