The story of a painting

I never know how a painting will go. Some paintings just take over and just happen effortlessly (I love that!) but more often it’s a process of layers over layers trying this and that until it works. Sometimes I wish I could rewind because what went before was better, but unfortunately that’s impossible. That layer becomes part of the history of the work.

Here’s a photo diary of the creation of ‘Old Country’ that’s going to The Army Art exhibition in Fremantle soon. It was one of those ones that didn’t come easily and in fact I lost my temper with it. Strangely it was lashing out and letting go that was the winning touch.

I hope you enjoy it.
